Hua added that Washington needs to adhere to international law and added that the US “frequently” tried to influence Hong Kong politics in the past.

On Thursday, the State Department called the Chinese government “thuggish” for allegedly being behind an article in Chinese media that revealed private information of American diplomat Julie Eedeh who is based in Hong Kong. Before the article was published, Hong Kong officially complained to the US as the region’s officials said a meeting between the diplomat and democracy activists from Demosisto in Hong Kong amounted to interference in internal affairs.
