Hong Kong elections see record turnout

The turnout in district elections in Hong Kong on Sunday was already the highest ever at 1:30 pm local time, nine hours before polls close, according to official data.

In numbers, this translates to 36.89% of registered voters or 1.52 million people casting ballots. The number of registered voters was also at a record high this year, at 4.13 million people.

The elections put 479 district councilor seats up for a vote, and the group that wins the majority of these seats also wins the 117 seats in the election committee of 1,200 that elects the leader of the autonomous city.
