US: Russia’s offer to extend START non-starter

United States National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien (pictured) described on Friday Russian President Vladimir Putin’s offer to extend the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) between Washington and Moscow without any changes to it as a “non-starter.”

“The US proposed an extension of New START for one year, in exchange for Russia and the United States capping all nuclear warheads during that period. This would have been a win for both sides, and we believed the Russians were willing to accept this proposal when I met with my counterpart in Geneva,” O’Brien tweeted. “The US is serious about arms control that will keep the entire world safe. We hope that Russia will reevaluate its position before a costly arms race ensues.”

Earlier in the day, Putin proposed a one-year extension of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) between the United States and Russia without additional conditions, saying it was necessary “to be able to conduct meaningful negotiations on all parameters of the problems.”
