Asia trades higher with vaccinations in focus

Major stock markets in the Asia-Pacific region registered gains deep into Monday’s session, with the news surrounding the coronavirus pandemic marking the weekend behind us.

As Australia neared a 90% COVID-19 vaccination rate, the government shortened the time needed between the second dose and a booster shot to five months. The S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.35% at its closing bell. On the other hand, South Korean health authorities reported record 80 coronavirus-related deaths on December 11, prompting pandemic-related concerns to increase. The Kospi Composite was the only negative index, losing 0.20% at 7:23 am CET.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government announced it has fully vaccinated more than 82.5% of its population to date. The Shanghai Composite rose by 0.46%, and the Shenzhen Composite grew 0.63% at 7:10 am CET, while the Hang Seng advanced 0.34% at 7:25 am CET. Japan’s Nikkei 225 surged 0.71% or 202 points at its close.
