Borrell still committed to JCPOA, rejects US sanctions
High Representative of the European Union Josep Borrell said on Thursday he remains committed to preserving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, more commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal.
“As coordinator of the #JCPOA Joint Commission I will continue to do everything possible to ensure the preservation and full implementation of the JCPOA by all. The #IranDeal remains a key pillar of the global non-proliferation architecture, contributing to regional security,” Borrel shared on Twitter.
Borrell went on to dismiss efforts by the United States to restore “virtually” all United Nations sanctions against Iran. “I take note of today’s announcement by the US. US unilaterally ceased participation in #JCPOA on 8 May 2018. It can not, therefore, be considered to be a JCPOA participant for the purposes of possible sanctions snapback foreseen by UNSC resolution 2231,” he concluded.
