ByteDance reducing India workforce over TikTok ban

TikTok owner ByteDance Ltd. decided to reduce the size of its team in India after the country extended its ban on the app.

“It is deeply regretful that after supporting our 2000+ employees in India for more than half a year, we have no choice but to scale back the size of our workforce. We look forward to receiving the opportunity to relaunch TikTok and support the hundreds of millions of users, artists, story-tellers, educators and performers in India,” a spokesperson for TikTok stated. According to media reports, TikTok informed employees in an email that it will close its business in India, noting only critical jobs will be retained.

India first banned TikTok and numerous other Chinese apps in June 2020, citing security concerns. The ban was extended last week.
