TikTok reaches 1 billion monthly users
Social media company TikTok celebrated a new milestone on Monday with the announcement that “more than 1 billion people around the world now come to TikTok every month.”
Despite still being some way off the Facebook, Inc. group’s 3.51 billion monthly users, the app’s popularity has continued to grow steadily since claiming 55 million users in January 2018 and it has inspired copycat functionalities on Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube.
TikTok is owned by Chinese company ByteDance Ltd., which narrowly avoided having to sell it to an American company to continue operating in the United States when deemed a national security risk by the outgoing Trump administration.
