US nonfarm payrolls up by 199,000 in December
Total nonfarm payroll employment in the United States increased by 199,000 in December, according to the Department of Labor’s report on Friday. The total of jobs gained in December fell far short of estimates putting it at over 400,000. Notably, leisure and hospitality added 53,000 jobs, but employment is still down 7.2% or 1.2 million compared to February 2020.
Unemployment dropped by 0.3 percentage points to 3.9% in December, declining more than forecast, with the number of unemployed persons decreasing by 483,000 to 6.3 million. The average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls increased by 19 cents to $31.31.
