China to establish carbon emissions control system – report
China is expected to gradually build and implement a carbon emissions control system during its 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), according to a report published on Wednesday by the country’s top environmental advisors.
China’s high-carbon energy generation infrastructure and power consumption are the causes of China’s current ecological and environmental problems. As stated in the plan, written by the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED), decarbonization technologies should be deepened, and green technologies should be prioritized along with economic recovery.
China faces challenges in its attempt to implement the Paris Agreement, including uncertainty of the international environment, the short deadline to achieve carbon neutrality, and a lag in innovation in the field of green technology. “Reduction of carbon emissions has become the key strategic direction in China’s construction of an ecological civilization,” said Huang Runqiu, the Minister of Ecology and Environment of China.
