The official expressed reservations about the temporary deal because May is surrounded by hard line Brexiteers in the government who would “threatening to tear up any deal we do” as soon as London leaves the European Union.

“Where we are at at the moment is: yes, we want a customs union, but a permanent and comprehensive customs union and the reason for that – why we’ve become the party of business – is that businesses want security not just for a few months up to an election but they want it permanently,” McDonnell pointed out.

Earlier in the the, May wrote a piece for the Mail, recognizing that it is not possible to convince the Tories to change their mind on the withdrawal agreement. She stated, however, that the UK needs to complete the process of divorce from Brussels and deliver on the people’s vote from 2016.
