Schumer: WH not ready for stimulus compromise

The White House wasn’t ready to reach a compromise on the latest coronavirus relief package for the United States economy, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said after a meeting with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. However, the Democrat added that his side is willing to continue negotiations on Friday. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who was also present at the talks, added that it is “most unfortunate” the two parties are “very far apart” on the deal.

Meanwhile, Mnuchin said in the aftermath of the talks that the Trump administration and congressional Democrats are “far apart” on some big issues but noted they are also now “closer” on a number of matters they discussed. He added that “a lot of progress” has been made. However, Mnuchin pointed out President Donald Trump would not sign a bill that puts a lot of money in the hands of state and local governments. He went on to add that talks would continue on Friday.

Earlier, Meadows said Trump would sign an executive order on coronavirus economic relief unless a deal is reached.
