US border patrol beats 35-year-high of migrant encounters
United States Customs and Border Protection published its monthly statistics on migrant encounters on Friday, marking a record high in apprehensions for the fiscal year of 2021. The 1.73 million cases beat a 35-year-old record when the figure was 1.69 million.
The month of September recorded 192,000 apprehensions, which is the first decrease since President Joe Biden took office, but is still the fifth consecutive month of over 180,000 encounters. 26% of the migrants had at least one prior encounter in the previous 12 months.
“In September, CBP continued its tireless efforts to facilitate a return to normal trade and travel, which has been vital to America’s economic rebound from the pandemic. Passenger vehicle and pedestrian travel, as well as air traffic, continue to be significantly higher than during comparable periods from the height of the pandemic in 2020, with commercial truck transit higher than pre-pandemic levels,” said CBP Acting Commissioner Troy Miller.
